CBS News App
Here are different examples of recent notifications I received from the CBS News app. I have underlined the attention-grabbing portion of each headline:
May 12, 2017-
"Sean Spicer... following a week of controversy and contradictions."
"President Trump appeared to threaten fired FBI Director James Comey"
May 9, 2017-
"JUST IN: James Comey has been fired as FBI director, the White House said."
I noticed that these notifications were different than the typical CBS News headline. The wording of these headlines seemed to be much more urgent and "late breaking." On phones, people tend to glance at and then ignore notifications, and on social media they only skim through the content before scrolling past it. Because of this, it is more important for CBS News to create attention grabbing headlines for the app than it is for articles they publish online or discuss on television. Without these flashy titles, the audience would pay little to no attention to the content.
In addition to this, CBS pushed out notifications at least three times a day. Between May 9th and May 12th, I received eleven different messages from the app. This is unusually frequent for an app, as the average number of notifications on non-social media sites is only a few times a week, and this became quite annoying. However, the app remained relevant within my life. By sending numerous notifications, I was reminded often of the app and my curiosity of their content grew. Often, most apps I download I soon forget about, but the CBS News app notifications prevented this from happening and instead spiked my interest.
Outside of notifications, the app has a flashy appearance. The design is a stark white background with large “CBS NEWS” spelled across it. Every time I open my phone, it is the first thing my eyes flick to. This aspect is also attention grabbing, and the white stands out among other apps on my phone. By incorporating this bold design, it peaks my desire to open their app.
Within the app, navigation is easy and clear. This adds to the ease of usage, meaning the audience is not frustrated by CBS’s app. They enjoy it, which increases the likelihood of them using it again. It also provides access to not only articles, but also different CBS television segments. The audience is therefore able to watch CBS's content anywhere at anytime, which increases viewings.
